I am in a local Detroit Indie/Rock band. We have been playing shows for around a year now and gathering a fan base. My question is this, do "likes" on facebook actually matter to people higher up in the industry? I feel like although we are a good band and have a strong following we aren't taken as seriosly as some others due to us not having that many "Likes" on our page, I hate it. Also is there anything that you might recommend that a young band might do to get a leg up in the local scene?

The tastemakers in the industry all have different tastes, and look for different things.  Some do base “buzz” partially on numbers, whether it be plays, downloads, record sales, likes, followers.

Others base everything they need to know solely on a band’s live abilities and recording quality.

I like to think of this way.  If you’re doing things to boost your Facebook likes, you’re wasting your time when you could be playing shows or writing better songs to get people to ACTUALLY like you.  The Facebook likes will come.  If you are truly worthy of praise, it will find you.

For that reason (among others), I’m so, so glad that MySpace is dead.

As for getting “a leg up”, there’s 3 things you can do.

1.  Write better songs.
2.  Perform your songs to the absolute best of your ability.
3.  Work hard to draw people to your shows, and give them a reason to come back.

Seems simple, but why do you continue to eat hamburgers or watch hockey?  Because you LIKE to.  If people truly like watching your band, they will come back.  If your friends came to see you because they were your friends, and you didn’t seriously impress them, they’ll probably find something else to do next time you have a show.
